The Founder's Guide

You have the idea.
Here's what actually comes next.

Most first-time founders get stuck at the same place — not because the idea is wrong, but because nobody tells them what a real business actually needs on day one. This is that guide. Read it end to end. Bookmark it. You'll refer back.

Before you begin

A business is infrastructure, not just an idea.

The gap between "I have an idea" and "I run a business" is a series of small, boring, structural decisions. Company registration. An email that doesn't end in @gmail.com. A website that answers real questions. Each one is easy in isolation — but skipping any of them quietly costs you customers, credibility and time. Below is the shortest honest path we know.

The 7 Essentials

What every serious business needs on day one.

You don't need all of these before you can trade. You do need all of them before customers stop hesitating.

Step 01

Business Registration

What it is

Registering a limited company with Companies House gives your business a legal identity separate from you personally. It gets a company number, an official address and the ability to sign contracts, open a business bank account and hire people.

Why it matters

Sole traders and unregistered side hustles can trade, but they don't scale. A registered Ltd protects your personal assets, lets you invoice larger clients (many won't pay individuals), and signals seriousness. It's also required for business banking, VAT registration and most B2B contracts.

If you skip it: You'll get stuck the first time a real client asks for your company number, or the moment you need to invoice over a few thousand pounds.
What "done properly" looks like
  • Register a private limited company (Ltd) with Companies House
  • Register for Corporation Tax with HMRC (within 3 months of trading)
  • Register for VAT if you expect to exceed £90,000 in turnover
  • Set up a business bank account under the company name
Step 02

Your Domain Name

What it is

A domain is your address on the internet — yourbusiness.co.uk or yourbusiness.com. You rent it (usually yearly) from a registrar. It's the foundation for your website AND your professional email.

Why it matters

Your domain is the single most important brand asset you own. It follows you everywhere — email, invoices, social bios, business cards. Registering it early prevents someone else from taking it, and it's often cheaper than a coffee.

If you skip it: You'll be forced to use awkward alternatives (yourbusinessuk-official.com) or end up rebranding later because someone parked the good name.
What "done properly" looks like
  • Secure the .co.uk AND the .com if both are available
  • Register for at least 2 years to signal permanence to search engines
  • Keep the domain in an account you personally control — never a freelancer's
  • Enable auto-renewal so it never lapses
Step 03

Professional Email

What it is

A business email uses your own domain — hello@yourbusiness.co.uk — instead of a personal Gmail or Yahoo address. It's usually hosted through Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 for around £5-10 per user per month.

Why it matters

A @gmail.com email tells customers you're a hobby. A domain email tells them you're a company. It's the cheapest credibility upgrade in business. It also makes email deliverable (your invoices stop landing in spam) and gives your team shared calendars, drives and video calls.

If you skip it: Every quote you send from a personal address costs you conversion. Every one. You'll never know how many.
What "done properly" looks like
  • Set up Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 on your domain
  • Create role-based addresses: hello@, accounts@, support@
  • Configure SPF, DKIM and DMARC so your emails actually arrive
  • Add a signature with your name, role, company number and website
Step 04

A Website That Works

What it is

Not a Facebook page. Not a Linktree. A real website — hosted on your domain — that answers the questions a customer has before they'll pay you. Who are you? What exactly do you do? Who have you done it for? How do I get started?

Why it matters

Roughly 8 out of 10 people will Google you before they buy, book or refer. If they can't find a professional website, most of them quietly move on. A good website works 24/7 as your best salesperson — one that never has a bad day and never forgets the pitch.

If you skip it: You'll spend the next two years re-explaining your business in DMs, losing referrals to competitors who show up on Google, and wondering why growth feels so heavy.
What "done properly" looks like
  • Build on a modern stack you can actually update (not Wix drag-and-drop)
  • Cover the essentials: services, process, pricing, proof, contact
  • Include a single clear call-to-action on every page
  • Make it fast, mobile-first and accessible — this is table stakes now
Step 05

Google Business Profile

What it is

A free Google listing that puts your business on Google Maps and in the local 'map pack' when people search for what you do near where they are. It shows your hours, photos, reviews, phone number and website.

Why it matters

For any business with local customers — care providers, restaurants, tradesmen, churches, salons, consultants meeting clients — this is often the single highest ROI marketing asset you'll ever set up. It's free, it drives phone calls directly, and it collects reviews that compound over time.

If you skip it: Your competitors will collect your customers. Google Maps is not optional in 2026.
What "done properly" looks like
  • Claim and verify your Business Profile with a real address
  • Add complete info: hours, services, service area, photos
  • Ask every happy customer for a Google review (link them directly)
  • Post updates monthly to signal activity to Google's algorithm
Step 06

Brand Identity

What it is

A brand is more than a logo. It's the consistent visual and verbal language you use everywhere — colours, fonts, tone of voice, imagery, how you write an email, what your invoice looks like. It's the reason two businesses selling the same thing feel completely different.

Why it matters

Branding lets you charge more. Full stop. Two care providers with identical service quality but different brands will command different prices. A coherent brand also makes marketing cheaper — every touchpoint reinforces the last, so you need fewer of them.

If you skip it: You'll compete on price. And someone will always be cheaper than you.
What "done properly" looks like
  • Define who you're for, and just as importantly, who you're not for
  • Design a logo, colour palette and typography system — then use them everywhere
  • Write in a consistent voice across your website, emails and social
  • Apply the brand to invoices, contracts, proposals and email signatures
Step 07

Business Automation

What it is

Software that does the boring, repetitive work of running a business — booking calls, sending invoices, chasing payments, capturing leads, following up with customers, keeping track of what you promised who and when.

Why it matters

The founders who burn out aren't the ones with too many customers. They're the ones doing manually what a £30/month tool could handle for them. Automation is what lets you look organized at 20 clients — and stay organized at 200.

If you skip it: You'll spend your evenings copy-pasting confirmations, forgetting to invoice, and losing leads because you didn't reply fast enough.
What "done properly" looks like
  • Pick one CRM (HubSpot, Pipedrive or similar) and put every lead in it
  • Automate invoicing and payment reminders (Xero, QuickBooks, Stripe)
  • Use a booking tool (Calendly, SavvyCal) instead of email tag
  • Set up a simple welcome / follow-up email sequence for new customers
Learn from others

Six mistakes we watch founders make — every single week.

None of these are fatal. All of them are avoidable. Most cost more to fix later than they would have cost to do properly the first time.

Trading before registering

Taking payments through a personal account for months, then trying to untangle it at year-end. Register first, then trade.

Buying the domain last

Waiting until the website is ready to buy the domain. By then someone else may own it, or the .co.uk is gone.

Free Gmail as your business email

It's the fastest way to look like a hobby. A domain email costs less than one lost customer.

Facebook page instead of a website

You don't own it, you can't rank in Google with it, and it can vanish overnight. A website is an asset. A Facebook page is a tenancy.

Doing branding 'later'

You'll build everything with placeholder colours and fonts, then realise you have to redo it all. Do the brand once, upfront.

Running everything from your head

Founders who don't set up systems early become the systems. That's how burnout starts.
